İ.Ü. Onkoloji Enstitüsü 15 patients had developed brain metastases among 1129 cases who were treated and followed regularly in Istanbul Medical Faculty's Radiation Oncology Department. These patients were analysed according to age, clinical stage, original treatment, the period between the first treatment and brain met., clinical, neurological and radiological symptoms and signs, localisation of the brain mets., metastatic sites other than brain, treatments given after the occurence of brain mets., and the response to these treatments and the survivals. To 12 of 15 cases who had multiple mets. in the brain total cranial irradiation had been given. Metastasectomy had been applied to a patient with single met. in the frontal lobe. Another patient with single met. in the cerebellum had small field irradiation after metastasectomy. The last patient who had single met. in the hypothalamic region had small field irradiation. Radiation therapy was applied with Co-60 therapy units 5 weeks as a total dose of 45-50 Gy. Following Radiation therapy patients had systemic Chemotherapy and hormonotherapy. Neurological symptoms and subjective complaints improved 40 % to 90 % in 13 of the cases. In two patients who had hemiplegias there had been no response. At the time of this retrospective analysis (May 1986) 2 patients were still surviving for 27 and 23 months after the development of brain mets. The rest of the patients were lost in times changing from 1 to 20 months. The average survival of this group was 8 months. Keywords :
