We evaluated the results of patients with gastric carcinoma who were treated with postoperative chemoradiotherapy.
METHODS
Seventy-six patients with gastric carcinoma, treated with postoperative
chemoradiotherapy between 2003 and 2007, were
retrospectively evaluated. There were 57 males. The median
age was 55.5 years (34-73 years). Chemotherapy was given
in accordance with the Intergroup-0116 study. Total 45Gy radiotherapy
was delivered to the gastric bed and regional nodes
and >50Gy dose was given to patients with positive surgical
margins. Thirty-five patients were treated with 3-dimensional
conformal radiotherapy.
RESULTS
Median survival was 22.5 months (6-60 months). The 5-year
overall survival rate was 42%. Loco-regional failures and distant
metastasis were detected in 10.5% and 34.2% of patients,
respectively. Grade-3 acute toxicity was seen in 11 patients.
No Grade-4 acute toxicity was detected.
CONCLUSION
Chemoradiotherapy improved loco-regional control rather
than reduction of distant metastases. Lower incidence of acute
toxicity might be due to nearly half of our patients being treated
with conformal radiotherapy or to genetic differences in the
patient population.
