Early cervical cancer can be treated by surgery or radiotherapy. Both methods have advantage and disadvantages. Conservation of ovaries, continuity of vaginal function, ability to do surgical staging, and immediate and successful management of complications which counterbalance morbidity, makes surgery the treatment of choice for us and other several authors. In this study, we examined morbidity, staging findings, postoperative complications, evaluation of pathology and some epidemiologic parameters. Radical hysterectomy, with appropriate pre and postoperative care as described, can be performed with low morbidity even in postmenopausal patients. 5 year survival for I-B was found to be 90% in this study. The greatest barrier to widespread utilization of radical hysterectomy and getting survival figures equal to that of radiotherapy is the number of well-trained pelvic surgeons.
