İzmir Atatürk Eğitim Hastanesi Patoloji Bölümü We collected the data of 45 patients diagnosed as malignant ovarian surface epitelial tumors at the Department of Pathology in İzmir Atatürk Traning and Research Hospital during 1993-1996. All cases were evaluated for the conventional parameters such as histologic type, differantiation, stage and for the presence of p53 tumour supressor gene. All cases were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and some were additionally stained with PAS, d-PAS and Alcian Blue. Immunohistochemical staining results were evaluated according to the criteria mentioned in the study of Klemi et al. Clinical staging was made according to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO). The results were found statistically insignificant. But as p53 protein positivity were found in 7% of well differantiated, in 50% of intermediate and" in 42.8% of poorly differantiated tumors, it seems that p53 tumor supressor gene positivity may be a poor prognostic factor for malignant ovarian surface epitelial tumors.
