57 cases of astrocytoma grade I-II were treated from 1978 to 1986 inclusive. Total tumour resection was achieved in 9 cases (16 %). 13 had grade I, 44 had grade II tumours. Treatment was given by cobalt-60 unit or 9 and 18 MV x-rays with 1.8-2 Gy. fractions. Whole brain was irradiated up to 50 Gy. and total tumour dose was boosted up to 60-64 Gy. with smaller fields. Among living patients the shortest follow up period was 12 months. Response was achieved in 25 % of the cases. One year survival was 86 % and 5-year survival was 69 °7o. Patients with total tumour resection, normal pretreatment neurologic function or response to radiotherapy had better survival.
